Romania has wild beauty, and snakes are part of it

Romania is not a country where snakes are a constant threat, but it’s also not a place where their presence can be ignored.
We have over 10 species of snakes, most of which are completely harmless to humans. However, among them hides the only truly dangerous species: the viper.

The most widespread venomous species in Romania is the common viper (Vipera berus), found in hilly and mountainous regions, especially in the Carpathians, Apuseni, and Dobrogea. Two other species are the horned viper (Vipera ammodytes), easily recognized by the characteristic bump on its head, and the steppe viper (Vipera ursinii), a rare and protected species.

But how dangerous are they, really?
The answer is simple: a viper bite can be serious, but it's rarely fatal if medical help is sought quickly. Snakes do not attack humans on their own. Most bites happen when snakes are stepped on, caught, or provoked.

What should you do if you encounter a snake?
– Do not approach it. Don’t try to touch or kill it.
– Back away slowly, avoiding sudden movements.
– If you are bitten, stay calm, lie down, keep still, and call for medical help immediately.
– Do not try to suck out the venom, cut the wound, or apply ice. Just immobilize the area and get to a hospital urgently.

Snakes are part of the natural balance.
They help control rodent populations and play a vital role in ecosystems. They shouldn't be hated, but rather understood and respected.

Romania has wild beauty, and snakes are part of it. Caution is key — not panic
